STICHWORT Newsletter 1/1996
Since 1990, when the "Archive of the New Women's Movement" became the "STICHWORT, The Archives of The Women's and the Lesbian's Movement," the stack of videos has been growing in the glass cases and our equipment lies ever ready to jump from the podium discussion to recording the event. (Our contract to set a satellite into Venus' orbit for better reception for our local senders in Tahiti is still being negotiated....).
De facto: a very hopeful Videothek
With the 1995 purchase (finally!) of a television, 34-station cable reception, and video recorder, we could equip the new location at Diefenbachgasse with its own media room (where we continue to dream of the sofa and glass cases). A rather eclectic collection of videos includes recordings of programs on women's topics and tapings of the Austrian Broadcasting Network's features on issues such as: women and careers, the war against women in Bosnia, problems in lesbian and gay marriages, sexism in the workplace; the festival organized by the 6th Austrian Women's Summer University; and the highly prized documentary "Zwischen Höhenflügen und Bruchlandungen" (Between High Flights and Emergency Landings) made on the 20th anniversary of the lesbian spring meeting. The film classics Sally Potter's "Orlando" or Percy Adlon's "Salmonberries," among others, can also be found.
Audio Library
Contained in the audio library, in addition to the numerous tapings of discussion events from Vienna's growing women's movement of the 1980s, are; firstly, research interviews such as those conducted by Hanna Hacker and Gitti Geiger for their book Donauwalzer Damenwahl (comprising a formidable 3,594 minutes!). Secondly, music recordings including undiscovered composer-talents such as Barbara Strozzi, Clara Faisst, Grazyna Bacewicz, and legendary acts like Ethel Smyth's 'March of the Women' which the Viennese Lesbian Choir "Sappho's Singers Unlimited" studied carefully. And last but not least, the entire collection of the 1991-1992 pirate broadcasts of "Sisters in Voice" which was donated by the pirates themselves.
Picture Archive
A picture archive of a fair size - which, however, does not compete with the much larger AUF collection - contains, for example, archived photos of the women's block of the 1 May 1978 demonstration, as well as the 1989 ILGA conference and other events from recent decades. As becomes evident, the pictures to a great extent are from those events where the STICHWORT women were also involved!
Use
STICHWORT does not loan out its audio-visual materials and reserves the right to oversee the intended use of the pictures.
