WHAT can I search for? This online search provides access to the entire STICHWORT library collection. The collection is arranged according to the type of material (= views) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is possible to search for books, important feminist periodicals and gray literature. The bibliographic data and topics of essays in collected editions and articles in scientific periodicals are available as individual entries. The online search provides also access to articles in Austrian feminist grassroot magazines 1972-1990 (in german only, not available in the English version). There's more to STICHWORT: On the premises or through our research service it is possible to conduct research in the STICHWORT archive material, which includes: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are 3 different search forms available to perform a search in the STICHWORT Library: ![]() ![]() Note: this search form is NOT designed for searches by author, because the authors and editors are split up into 4 separate categories, whereas the library search form consolidates these 4 categories into one single index of authors, which can be accessed by searching by "Author/Editor." ![]() This full text search is really easy, however it is not always the most efficient way to research a particular topic. Parts of the collection (= views) that are not relevant to your search can also be deactivated (CTRL + mouse click on the collection removes them from your selection). We highly recommend selecting all views when conducting a search with the library search form! There are instructions about how to enter information for each search category. Simply click on the name of the category and read the instructions that appear below! Clicking on "A-Z" in each category enables you to view the full index list. You can jump to the keyword you are looking for by entering the first letters of a word and by clicking on it. This automatically enters the keyword into your search box. Using the Author/Editor search box, you can search in all the author and editor categories. Please enter the names as follows: last_name, first_name. Note: In this order! use a comma, a space and a period (trunkation) at the end! The first name can also be abbreviated (truncated) with a period: last_name, f. You can also omit the first name completely, which will possibly call up different authors with the same last name. Note: The period at the end is important, as it allows for all of the ways a name is written to be included in your search, such as multiple first names etc. Names must be placed in quotation marks when searching for two or more names. Use spaces between multiple names. You can also link the names using AND! "last_name, first_name." "last_name, first_name." [or:] "last_name, first_name." AND "last_name, first_name." This entry also requires a period (trunkation) in order to include subtitles or additional title information in the search (otherwise it will come up as "no objects found"). for example: the sex which is not one. Title (keywords) enables you to search for words (= keywords) in the title. The search engine will automatically search for the keywords you enter into this box in other categories as well series, series subtitles and additional information this category is particularly efficient when researching a certain title. For example: sex one. Important: The search boxes "title (first words)" and "title (keywords)" are a constructive tool for searching for a particular title of an essay or book. However this is NOT an efficient way to search for a certain topic. Please use the thesaurus search box when researching material on a particular topic. This enables you to search for a book or periodical series. Examples: Gender and Culture neue frau feministische studien signs Year This not only searches for one particular year, but you can also define a particular time period as well. For example: 1973 or 1970-1979 or 1990- or -1975 etc.
To search the content available at STICHWORT, we have developed our own detailed, feminist classification system according to subject areas, which functions as a thesaurus of the information available in our database. The thesaurus enables searches based on numeric notations (such as 12-4 or 11-6.3) and synonyms used in everyday language, such as the relationship among women or prostitution, i.e. sex work. The thesaurus word lists are arranged systematically and in alphabetical order. The numeric notation appears first, followed by the terms used in everyday language (synonyms). The number in parentheses that follows the term shows how many entries there are for this term. This number appears for each synonym. You can select your term from the list by clicking on the word. You can also link multiple terms by entering AND, i.e. OR. For example: 12-2.2 AND 01-5.1 The thesaurus is ordered in layers. The top layer contains the notations (subject areas), geographic areas, names of people and collectives. When researching a certain term, we recommend that you first take a look at the Notations can also be abbreviated (truncated) using a period. Note: When truncating an entry in conjunction with other search words, always make sure the truncated entry appears first. For example: to search for medicine (16-2) and gynecology (16-2.1) in conjunction with sexual harassment, enter the following: 16-2. AND 15-5 German and English words: in the English thesaurus list a few German words can be found in the entries (and vice versa). However, these words are not an exhaustive list of all of the German keywords available. The full list is available in the German version of the database on the STICHWORT website. The name of the country is included if the text contains relevant information (descriptions, statistic data, reports etc.) about a certain area. The main focus of our collection is Austrian, which is therefore not always listed as a keyword for each entry, as this is "usually" the case. To research a country or continent, simply enter the word from the thesaurus list, for example: Canada. To refine your search, in addition to the country’s name you may also search for a context, such as: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We recommend browsing the list of words in the Thesaurus special list (available in german only). The countries are listed individually and can be entered into the search box directly by clicking on the name. You can search for names of individual women who come up in relation to the following notations: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Men’s names are included as objects of literary and philosophical criticism. We recommend using the alphabetical view, which contains different spellings of names, pseudonyms etc. You may search for a personal heading in general or in specific context. To find everything available on Simone de Beauvoir, enter her name into the thesaurus search box or click on the following in the thesaurus list: "beauvoir, simone de." To limit your hits to "literary criticism" on Simone de Beauvoir (i.e. to exclude biographical, philosophical and primary literary texts on and by Simone de Beauvoir) we recommend entering 21-2.1 AND "beauvoir, simone de." [or]: "Literary criticism, female authors reviewed" AND "beauvoir, simone de." If your search is to be very specific, you can also use the thesaurus special list (in german). Note: Name searches using the thesaurus search box must be in double quotes (“ ”) and end with a period! You can find autonomous women's and lesbian groups in Austria, Austrian political parties and the world women's conferences in this search category. Due to the common abbreviations used, we highly recommend selecting the organization by clicking on the keyword in the thesaurus special list (in german): ![]() ![]() ![]() Note: The thesaurus contains texts about women's groups, etc. You can search for works by groups, collectives or organizations by entering their name in the author/editor search box. You may select how you would like to view your results in the frame on the left. Tip: If the font is too big you can reduce it under View > Font Size. Standard list This is a summary format that provides a collective list of all the acquired data. It contains the most possible information. Use the arrow buttons to navigate the previous and next pages. Citation format This compiles the most important data in a citation format. This is the most efficient way to quickly browse your search results. It is the most suitable view for printing out your selection of material. Search results can be organized according to call number ("citation"), which is useful for ordering a book, or according to "author title year" or simply "year." Ordering books: if you would like to see the books you found at STICHWORT later, please make sure you write down the complete call number: For example: R FEM 5733 or H FRE 1268 or print out your search results using the "citation" format! Tip: We offer research service, including procuring literature lists (as a basis) for compiling a bibliography. Boolean operators You may enter into the search boxes the words AND a and AND [space] OR: o or OR [semi-colon] To link individual search categories, press the AND/OR button at the bottom of the page! In order to make more complex links between the search categories or for special search requests, please send a request to STICHWORT! Truncating "Abbreviating" search words is called truncating. For example, you may search for "feminis." in order to find search results that include feminist, feminism, feminists, Feministinnen etc. Truncating is done in various ways in different databases. Our program FAUST uses a period [.] to truncate. If the portion of the search request that remains open only consists of one character, please put a question mark [?] in place of that character. For example: feminis. ?ongress Truncating is often done in combination with Boolean searches, which is an elegant means of refining or expanding your search request. It is also very helpful when searching for a term you are not sure how is written. Lower case, umlauts In the search forms, the valid format is: A = a. It is not necessary to enter accents, but it is possible. Umlauts and the German letter ß [ss] can also be entered. However, they will be automatically put into the format readable for the system. |
