Banners and Objects

Banners illustrate the demands of the Second Wave women’s movement in a precise and humorous/ironic way. STICHWORT posseses a small collection of banners, unique among the women’s archives in German-speaking countries. They were used for example at protests, such as on International Women’s Day, or at events, with demands on topics including peace and disarmament, the right to self-determination or social and economic topics.

The objects come from actions of the women’s movement and self-portrayals of women’s establishments like buttons, printed clothing and objects from actionist balloons to fierce snow globes. The buttons present a diverse spectrum of political statements since the 1970s pertaining to the anti-nuclear movement, peace and disarmament, self-determination, lesbian consciousness or the UN Decade for Women.

The banners and objects can be searched for on-site in the STICHWORT database according to titel, topic and form-related criteria and can be requested as loans for exhibits and publications.
